Financial Education

We have begun an exciting project in January 2026 working with Emma from Young Enterprise. Staff have been lucky to attend the financial education conference the last two years held in Manchester and London. What an amazing platform to share sector leading practice in how schools across the country are supporting financial education skills through first hand, life experiences. All of the projects involved groups working on products to sell, calculating profit, loss, lending and how their roles can work to develop a business. Learners have gone on to use these experiences to support them in applying for roles and apprenticeships after leaving school. Immensely inspiring and we can't wait to start.

We are passionate about developing these opportunities and embedding financial education in our curriculum. We are extremely grateful to Emma, Melissa and their team at Young Enterprise for their support.

Our vision:

At our school, financial education is an essential life skill that empowers our learners to become confident, informed, and responsible individuals. As a small Welsh school rooted in its community of Saltney Ferry, we place real-life learning at the heart of our approach, ensuring that financial understanding is meaningful, practical, and relevant.

We believe that pupils learn best by doing. From an early age, our learners develop financial awareness through hands-on experiences, including creating and running their own businesses, managing budgets, setting prices, and making informed financial decisions. These opportunities enable pupils to apply their learning in authentic contexts and understand the real-world consequences of financial choices.

Our strong links with local industry and businesses enrich financial education by bringing learning to life. Through collaboration with local employers, entrepreneurs, and community partners, pupils gain insight into careers, enterprise, and the world of work within Wales. These partnerships help learners see clear connections between their education, future aspirations, and the economic life of their community.

Financial education at our school goes beyond money management. We equip pupils with essential financial life skills, including saving, budgeting, ethical spending, understanding risk, and making responsible choices. Learners are encouraged to think critically, work collaboratively, and develop resilience, creativity, and independence.

Our financial education provision supports all four purposes of the Curriculum for Wales by enabling learners to become:

  • Ambitious, capable learners who apply numeracy, problem-solving, and critical thinking in real-life financial contexts

  • Enterprising, creative contributors who design, run, and evaluate their own business ideas

  • Ethical, informed citizens who understand financial responsibility, fairness, and sustainability

  • Healthy, confident individuals who develop independence, resilience, and financial wellbeing

Our vision is for every learner to leave Ysgol Saltney Ferry with the confidence, skills, and mindset needed to navigate financial decisions throughout their lives, contributing positively to their community and to Wales’ future economy.
