This is an exciting time for the young people of Wales. A brand new Curriculum for Wales will be in place in September 2022. It is designed to enthuse learners aged 3 to 16 and give them the foundations they need to succeed in an ever-changing world.

The new curriculum will have more emphasis on equipping young people for life. It will build their ability to learn new skills and apply their knowledge more confidently and creatively. As the world changes, they will be more able to adapt positively. They will also get a deeper understanding of how to thrive in an increasingly digital world, developing digital skills across the curriculum to prepare them for the opportunities and risks that an online world presents.

The new curriculum is built on the four purposes of the curriculum for learners to become:

  1. Ambitious and Capable Learners.
  2. Enterprising and Creative Contributors.
  3. Ethically informed Citizens of Wales and the World.
  4. Healthy and confident individuals.

The new areas of the curriculum are known as Areas of Learning and Experiences (AoLEs) which are:

  • Health and Wellbeing.
  • Science and Technology.
  • Language, Literacy and Communication.
  • Maths and Numeracy.
  • Expressive Arts.
  • Humanities.

All of these areas are as important as each other and interlinked. However the following key skills are to be developed across all areas of the AoLE's.

  • Language, Literacy and Communication.
  • Maths and Numeracy.
  • Digital competence,

We currently operate as Foundation Phase (Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) and Key Stage 2 (Years 3 - 6) however this will soon change to:

Progression Step 1: Nursery and Reception.

Progression Step 2: Years 1, 2 and 3.

Progression Step 3: Years 4, 5 and 6.
